Reflections:
As an artist, photography is to study and reconfirm my thoughts and what I see, as well as to record what I feel through the journey of daily life. I studied oil painting and started to experiment with photography as an extension of my this practice and found different possibilities through photography.
In this series, Yuriko Kubota focuses on the energy she felt growing up in Tokyo during the Shōwa era (1926 - 1989) along with her fragmented memory of her father who passed away in 2020. Her father was a typical Japanese salaryman, who when the economy was growing; worked hard and drank even harder. Kubota photographed images from Shōwa era movies or newscasts, which connect her to this energy and these memories. She layers the images with mixed media to highlight and obscure, just like her recollection.
