Printing & Framing
Please find an overview of our standard printing and framing styles below:
ARCHIVAL PRINTING
We have partnered with Akasha Art Projects for many of our editioned prints. They use an Epson SureColor P9000 inkjet printer with archival inks. They utilize 11 Epson UltraChrome inks with superior black density for the ultimate in photographic imaging and reproduction.
Hahnemühle Photo Rag:
Our standard paper is 100% cotton, 308 gsm and is both acid and lignin-free. A high quality fine art paper suited for archival inkjet printing. The paper is soft white with a slight felt structure, lending each print a three-dimensional appearance and impressive pictorial depth. It also produces brilliant colours, deep blacks, striking contrasts and perfect reproduction of detail.
Deckle and Straight Edge:
Deckling is when the edges of the paper are torn to give an uncut appearance. Deckling an artwork is a great way to add a hand finished touch to the work. A straight edge is when an artwork has a crisp clean cut edge and gives a contemporary look.
STANDARD FRAMING
Our frames are custom cut and assembled by hand. We use all archival and acid-free materials to protect the artwork from damage or yellowing. Each completed frame is reviewed for imperfections and quality control. Hanging hardware is included on the back of each frame.
Gallery Frames:
Our standard frames are made of ash wood with a subtle wood grain. They have a thin frame face and nice external depth to create a contemporary framing style.
Black - 5/8 or 3/4 inch frame face width (depending on art size), 1.5 inch depth.
White - 5/8 or 3/4 inch frame face width (depending on art size), 1.5 inch depth.
Whitewash - 5/8 or 3/4 inch frame face width (depending on art size), 1.5 inch depth.
Natural - 5/8 or 3/4 inch frame face width (depending on art size), 1.5 inch depth. Exterior is unvarnished and interior is varnished to protect the artwork. Fully varnished also available upon request.
Floater Frame:
A style of frame that wraps around an artwork leaving a small reveal which gives the illusion the artwork is floating. Recommend only for artworks that do not require glass or plexiglass to protect the materials.
Framed Tight to Image:
Prints are framed flush with the edge of the image. Acrylic spacers are used to protect the art from touching the plexiglass.
Framed Matted:
A mat with a bevel cut window opening to the edge of your artwork. If the artwork has a signature or edition numbering, we will automatically mat around it unless otherwise specified. We use 4-ply acid-free white mat board as our standard. We match whites to each artwork.
Shadowbox Frame:
A frame where the interior sides are lined to create more internal depth. Our standard is to line walls in white unless otherwise specified. Used when floating an artwork or to give more visual presence. Can also be added to Framed Tight or Matted artworks to add more depth.
Inset Float:
Floating an artwork allows for the work to be inset with the edges visible. It can be raised and drymounted onto a backer to allow for shadows to form or hinged directly to the backer.
Hinge Mounting:
A non-permanent method which uses t-hinges with wheat starch paste to mount the artwork to the backer. The artwork will not lay perfectly flat and will have some natural waves to the paper depending on the material. This method is recommended for original or high value works and can be removed with very little residue remaining.
Drymounting:
A permanent method where the artwork is drymounted to an acid-free backer which allows it to lay perfectly flat. This method is nonreversible and is not recommended for original or high value works. Used most often with prints to get a crisp flat image, unless otherwise specified.
UV Plexiglass:
The majority of our art is framed in UV protective acrylic. It is clear, durable and lightweight. It also protects your artwork from harsh UV rays.
Museum Glass:
Eliminates most reflections, blocks up to 99% of UV rays and is conservator grade. It allows for optimal light transmission to brighten colours. It is durable and easy to clean. This is an add on option for most framed artworks but it not recommended for shipping. If you wish to add this and ship, please consult us beforehand.
HANGING HARDWARE
All of our artworks will be equipped with the appropriate hardware for easy installation. In most cases this involves D hooks on framed artworks and all you will require is the appropriate screws and plugs depending on your wall. Some of the larger works are supplied with cleats based on weight. We do not recommend adding picture wire as the artwork will not stay level or straight.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
If an artwork has specific instructions you will receive an email with the details otherwise our standards are as follows:
Dust frame with a lint-free cloth or use compressed air to remove debris from artwork. To clean plexiglass use only a lint-free cloth, never use any spray or product on acrylic.
