DesignTO 2024

Most years there are a few of our amazing Little Red artists that participate in DesignTO but this year it is such a great group with so many wonderful exhibitions to check out. Get out there and see some great art and design throughout the city, officially on from today until January 28th (some dates vary).

Artifacts (Jan 15–27) curated by Adrienna Matzeg along with Betty Wood and featuring eight North American textile artists investigates themes of architecture and memory. Installed at Bulthaup Toronto with a reception on Tuesday January 23rd, 6-8pm. RSVP from website.

Another exhibition to note is Juliet: A Journey From Verona (Jan 19–27) by REPUBLIC OF II BY IV in collaboration with Suite 22. Another shoutout goes to Adrienna Matzeg who works as an Industrial Designer with II BY IV. You can find it General Hardware, reception Thursday January 25th, 6-8pm.

Conversations With Trees (Jan 25–28) featuring a collaboration with two of our artists, visual artist Lori Harrison and sculptor Pooja Pawaskar. This exhibition explores the human experience and our complicated relationship to nature. You can see it at 2104 Dundas St W with a reception taking place on Friday January 26th, 6-9pm.

Jugando a Sanar (Jan 22-26) is a beautiful sculptural window installation by Nadira Narine exploring themes of childhood trauma and dopamine decor and their relationship to each other. See it in the window of GV&Co - 1206 Yonge St viewable 24 hours a day. A magical time is in the morning when the sun is shining.

Lucid Ideas (Jan 19–Feb 16) is a group exhibition showcasing the work of designers from Canada and abroad exploring translucency with qualities of ambiguity, illusion and complexity. Featuring our very own Stephanie Singh with her Island coffee table celebrating her Jamaican Heritage with reference to the topography as well as the plant and botanical waste materials. Remnants II (Jan 18–Feb 24) feat. Victoria Chin with Olga Klosowski continues the previous installation Remnants and explores objects through form, space and memory through different materials. Catch it at Abbozzo Gallery, reception Friday January 26th, 5-8pm.

Shahr-e-Farang: Peep Show (Jan 19–28) featuring goldsmith Pasha Moezzi and illustrator Salva Modarres. Translating literally to “city of Europe” which was a popular form of entertainment in Iran during the first half of the 20th century. Based on the European raree show (peep show or peep box) which exhibited pictures or objects viewed through a small hole or magnifying glass by wandering artists. Experience this interactive installation at Boxcar Social, Summerhill with a reception on Sunday January 21st, 1-4pm.

Woven ’66 (Jan 19–28) by Jade McDonell of Stoneface Co., a Canadian furniture and objects atelier. Featuring an accent table with woven leather using a technique called Intrecciato made famous by Bottega Veneta, founded in 1966. Find it at Stackt Market along with several other installations and an opening party Saturday January 20th 6-10:30pm.

In addition don’t miss Silvia Taylor at The District a marketplace for design products for the home at IDS Toronto on today and through January 21st. Her design line of glassware is stunning and comes in various shades and forms.
